Ceramic abutments: an easy solution for esthetic zone cases
Posted September 18, 2009

BioHorizons ceramic abutments are used for cement-retained, highly esthetic, and natural looking restorations in the esthetic zone where patients’ expectations are very high. These abutments are made from yttria-stabilized zirconia which is a biocompatible ceramic material with excellent strength characteristics. Ceramic abutments are available for all sizes of Internal, Tapered Internal and External implants.

Abutment modifications can be made using sintered diamond discs/wheels, or coarse diamond burs, which are specially manufactured for grinding on zirconia at 15,000-20,000 rpms. Dipping both the wheel and abutment in water at frequent intervals during modification will help minimize heat generation. Minor intra-oral adjustments can be performed using a coarse diamond bur and copious amounts of irrigation. This is to minimize heat and damage to the surrounding bone which could negatively affect implant osseointegration. At final delivery, torque the abutment screw to 30 Ncm using a .050” (1.25mm) hex driver and a calibrated torque wrench.
